This is the english version of
the interview with The Deadthings that can be found on the SLAM Rocks!
website. They've been born from ashes of the Voodoo Lovecats, Australians the Deadthings get themselves ready to conquer the world with their horror glam. For us to know some more we have caught up with vocalist Julian Mephisto, a true connoisseur of the los angeles glam scene... - Can you introduce the band to the Slam! readers and tell us about the story of DeadThings? The Deadthings were founded by original Voodoo Lovecats co-founder and songwriter Leigh Van Hell, he had tried a few attempts at putting together a horror sleaze/glam style band, but not much eventuated until he met up with myself. We both had a clear vision of what we thought this band could be. The Deadthings first hit the Australian live scene in October 2002, playing a steady line up of shows for the next 18 months. During that period we went through a few line up changes, settling on the current line up that appears on our new debut CD. - Why did Voodoo Lovecats split? I’m sure there are a lot of reasons, but as far as I know it mostly came down to the fact that they were facing another line up change to continue and a lot of their motivation to keep going as that band had diminished. - "When hell sleazes over" has just been released. What can you tell us about that? “When Hell Sleazes Over” is our debut EP that features 6 tracks , including five originals and a cover of the 80’s hit “I Ran” by Flock Of Seagulls. The single “Welcome To The Horror Show” can be downloaded from our website for people to hear. The CD is available from www.cdsmash.com and www.perrisrecords.com or directly from our website. - The Misfits, Motley Crue, Alice Cooper and Twisted Sister can be numbered among the artists who have influenced you more. What are your top albums ever? My top albums ever... hard question!!!
But here goes - Thanks to Frankenstein Drag Queens, Murderdolls, etc...glam metal has re-born from horror B-movies. What do you think of those two bands? I think that both of those bands are great, I prefer what Wednesday did with the Murderdolls and how the songs are a little more glam based and a little less thrashy. They did pave the way for people to start to accept bands like ourselves. - We could
say your look is kind of horror-glam. How did you create your own image? - What's
your favourite horror movie? - Do you know Dario Argento? I know that he is a Italian writer/director of Horror movies, I have only seen his work on Dawn of The Dead, Demons and Demons 2. I love the Demons films. - Julian,
the dye in your hair reminds me of Keri Kelli's (Big Bang Babies era).
Is that a coincidence? - I really like your Lip Service suit. Are there any clothes you couldn't do without and what is the band with the best look in your opinion? Thanx, I dig that suit very much and
it’s now probably the only outfit that I couldn’t do without,
that and my Keel - The Right To Rock T-Shirt. - I know Boy Dot Com and Shine from Australia. Any other good bands? The Shine are good friends of ours, we
must have played about ten shows together in the last 12 months, Boy Dot
Com has two ex members of The Deadthings in it, They tried to be in both
bands and it was just to hard. Otherwise there are a couple; The Sebasrockets
and The Hell City Glamours are kind of - Last
stupid question: have you ever knocked a kangaroo down? Interview conducted by Moreno.
